COVID-19 crisis threatens to exacerbate gender disparity in sports
(COVID-19-Krise droht die Geschlechterdisparität im Sport zu verschärfen)
Gender inequality is one of the foremost issues in sports that needs to be addressed by all stakeholders.
During a recent conversation titled, "Multilateralism in the time of COVID-19", organized by the United Nations on the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on culture, tourism and sports, Danka Bartekova, a three-time Olympian in shooting, bronze medalist at the 2012 London Olympics, and currently, the Vice-Chair of the International Olympics Committee (IOC) Athletes Commission remarked that women in sports should not be left behind in the post-COVID recovery phase. Similar views were echoed during the conversation by Marta Vieira da Silva, a Brazilian football player and UN Goodwill Ambassador, who remarked that for a better future, it is imperative that "women and girls can study, work, govern, and enjoy sport on an equal playing field".
