The medical consequences of taking performance-enhancing and other drugs in sport

This chapter has aimed to set out information about which drugs and doping methods are used by sports people for what reasons, and what adverse effects may be encountered as a result of this. In addition, information about other drugs, not banned by the IOC but which athletes may require, has been outlined, explaining any effects that they might have on the athlete`s performance. It is hoped this may assist prescribers and their patients through the potentially confusing regulations, and highlight the potentially serious medical consequences and powerful adverse effects of drug use for non-medical purposes in sport.
