Bicarbonate loading and its effects on performance
(Bikarbonatzufuhr und deren Auswirkung auf die Leistung)
Bicarbonate loading has been found to successfully enhance performance for high intensity, anaerobic type events lasting between 1 and 7 minutes. However, it does not appear to work for everyone and it also has some potentially serious side effects. Bicarbonate use actually dates back to the 1930s where it was found that the intake of acid salts decreased running performance by decreasing pH, whereas the intake of baking soda improved running performance [2, 3]. This paper will address the methods by which bicarbonate loading plays a role in improving your performance. More specifically, this paper will explain the underlying physiological mechanisms of how bicarbonate loading acts to buffer your lactic acid and delay fatigue, it will explain the most widely used methods of loading, and it will also exp lain the negative aspects of this particular supplement.
