Delivery of a strength and power training program via online interactive platforms is a viable option in enhancing sports-specific athletic performance outcome measures. Effective coaching can be executed in this mode through visual and verbal cueing and individualised feedback.

ABSTRACT

With an ongoing global pandemic, access to gym facilities as well as effective coaching for athletic performance training has been restricted due to safety regulations. The aim of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of the use of an internet-based interactive platform as a mode of delivery training sessions.

A 25-year-old professional golfer was given a 4-day strength and power training program for 16 weeks targeted to enhance golf performance through the measure of his maximal club head speed. The strength and power program included compound lifts, rotational power, flexibility, and golf specific exercises that increased in complexity throughout the training cycles. Training sessions were conducted by a strength coach via online video calls using an internet-based software called Zoom. Verbal and visual cueing were the sole sources of individualized feedback.

After 16 weeks of training, the maximal club head speed increased by 11.82% (from 185.24 km/hr to 207.12 km/hr). Other measures of strength and power that are directly correlated to this improvident such as 1RM deadlift, 1RM hang clean, depth jump height, and maximum push ups also increased by 17.11%, 25.2%, 9.72%, 17.24%, respectively.

The use of interactive internet-based platforms for strength and power training sessions is a viable and effective alternative for face-to-face sessions. Specific athletic performance and objective physical outcome measures can be improved through this mode of delivery. Appropriate, safe, and effective coach-led training programs can be made accessible for elite athletes using online platforms such as Zoom.]]></content:encoded>
