Intrapsychical correlates of skiing training efficiency

(Intrapsychische Korrelationen der Effizienz des Skitrainings)

INTRODUCTION: Training students in the scope of downhill skiing during winter camps is an important element of physical education teacher Professional preparation. High intensiveness of classes and environmental conditions, that is, mountains, require appropriate mental and physical preparation of the students. Learning about the level of fitness and personality features of the students will enable teachers and instructors to select appropriate means and didactic methods that will assure the increase of teaching process efficiency. METHOD: The research was carried out during a ski camp in the Czech Republic (N=153). Beginners made up a basic group, whereas 57 students with skiing specialization from the University in Greece made up a test/control group. The ievel of fitness was established by ICSPFT. Social fears, sports fears, and the need of social approval äs an indicator of social sensitivity upon evaluation were researched by our own questionnaire. Moreover, the participants' self-esteem was examined and the lying scale was used. Next, the difference between a distribution of frequency was assessed by chi2 test, and in case of paramefric variables (fitness tests), the significance of average differences between individual group was assessed by T-student test. RESULTS: The group with better results in skiing evolutions achieved an average level of the need for approval: 53,1% (S=13,1%) whereas the worse group - a iower level: 49,8% (3=11,3%), (chi2 test revealed a significant difference at the level p =0,03). The group displaying worse sports skills reveals a much higher need of social approval than the group with better fitness (draw. 1). The level of social fear is statisticaily much Iower in the group of better skiers. The level of sports fear in the Polish group is statistically much higher than in the Greek one. CONCLUSION: In order to Iower the level of fears we must make students aware of the conditions and situations which may occur on a Winter camp. Instructors should be aware of the fact that students with higher level of fear display Iower fitness levels and learn skiing evolutions more slowly. It refers both to the pace of leaming skiing evolutions in the introductory pnase äs well äs generally worse fitness; people with a higher level of fears assess their ability to leam this type of sports skills in the future äs worse, regardless the intensiveness of training.
