The British triathlon coach education programme

(Das Britische Triathlon-Trainer-Ausbildungsprogramm)

'We remember 3% of what we hear, 25% of what we see and 80% of what we do' With this in mind British Triathlon Association have developed their Coach Education Programme to provide courses for LI Assistant Coaches, LII Club Coaches and LIII Senior Coaches, a course for LIV Performance Coaches is currently being developed. The tutors (who are all experienced triathlon coaches) on these courses all receive training through sportscoach UK in the style of delivery of the courses. These courses are very interactive where the tutors are responsible for facilitating learning rather than presenting knowledge Prior to the coach education weekends the candidate coaches are give a homestudy resource pack to work through, which ensures a prior knowledge base before the course. The assessments take the form of a practical coaching assessment, a coaching log, written homestudy questions and a written project, and are designed to assess the coaches ability to apply their coaching knowledge. The Coach Assessors have all undergone formal training in assessing coaches in conjunction with sportscoach UK. The scheme has now been running successfully for 2 years with the number of registered triathlon coaches in the UK rising from less than 100 to more than 300 in that period.
