Rugby Union, Rugby 7's

(Rugby, 7er Rugby)

Rugby union is an intermittent collision sport, the characteristics of which are dependent on, amongst other contextual factors, the game format (15-a-side cf. 7-a-side), playing standard, player position and individual physical qualities. The characteristics of rugby match play and training mean that players are exposed to an increased risk of injury, for which incidence and severity are again dependent on format, standard and demands imposed on the individual. While collisions account for the majority of matchrelated injuries, players exposed to insufficient or excessive training doses also present an increased risk of injury. The strength and conditioning coach therefore holds a fundamental role in designing appropriate training programmes that ensure the rugby player is capable of meeting the demands of match play and that their risk of injury is minimised, These requirements should be met using an appropriately periodised and carefully evaluated training programme that comprises off season, pre season and in season macrocyles. However, practitioners should be capable of adapting the training content to respond to the individual, team. and coach's performance needs.
