Athletic Insight, the online journal of sport psychology
(Athletic Insight, die sportpsychologische Online-Zeitschrift)
Welcome to Athletic Insight, the online journal of sport psychology. Over the course of the past twenty years the field of athletics has received an increasing amount of public attention which has resulted in a demand for superior performances from today's athletes. Both coaches and athletes have started to realize that strength, speed and other athletic skills are not sufficient for the production of championship athletes. Athletes at the highest levels have minimal differences in physical skills; therefore, the mental components have begun to be viewed as crucial in determining success and failure. According to Terry (1989), athletic performance has three parts: physical preparation, technical skill, and psychological readiness. This model suggests that if any of the above areas are neglected, athletic performance will decline. However, psychological preparation is the component of Terry's model that is most often neglected by athletes and coaches alike.
Presently, the field of sport psychology and performance enhancement is growing exponentially. However, the sources of information related to the field are extremely limited. The purpose of this site is to provide a forum for discussion of topics that are relevant to the field of sport psychology through quarterly publications. This will be achieved through the publication of articles focusing on specific issues in the field as well as responses from readers to the articles. The subjects that will be covered include theory, research and practice of sport psychology as well as social issues related to the field of athletics. It is our hope that this journal will serve as a valuable resource for anyone that is interested in the field.
