Accuracy of two metabolic running equations for estimating VO2peak in male youth soccer players
(Genauigkeit zweier metabolischer Gleichungen zur Schätzung des VO2-Peaks bei männlichen Jugendfußballern)
This study examined the accuracy of two treadmill running equations for estimating peak oxygen consumption (V·O2peak) in youth soccer players. Thirty-two competitive males (age: 15.1 ± 1.2 years) completed a maximal treadmill test to determine observed V·O2peak (52.6 ± 6.7 ml·kg-1 ·min-1). Predicted V·O2peak values were made using speed and grade at exhaustion with the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and Fitness Registry and the Importance of Exercise National Database (FRIEND) equations. The ACSM equation showed no significant difference from observed V·O2peak (51.6 ± 4.1; p = .121), while the FRIEND equation (44.7 ± 3.6; p < .001) provided significantly lower values. Both equations were correlated with observed values (r = 0.87) and had similar standard errors (±3.3 ml·kg- 1 ·min-1). Bland-Altman analysis showed narrower agreement limits for ACSM (-1.0 ± 7.3) than FRIEND (-7.9 ± 7.8). The ACSM equation appears to be a reasonably accurate method for estimating V·O2peak in this population.
